Heat of Solution of Various Deicers

A deicer is a substance to prevent or remove ice. Types include sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, and calcium chloride.

 

Heat of solution, enthalpy of solution, or qsolution is amount of heat used in the formation of a solution and a subtype of enthalpy change or ΔH. Generally, a deicer with a high heat of solution is better than a deicer with a low heat of solution, because the deicer with the higher enthalpy of solution creates more heat, which melts more ice. qrxn (heat of reaction, in joules) + qsolution (heat of solution, in joules) = 0. qrxn (heat of reaction, in joules) = c (specific heat capacity) x M (mass, in grams) x ΔT (temperature change, in kelvins).

Another specific chemical reaction in study was that of this shorthand: MgCl2 + H20 Mg2+ + 2Cl- + H20. In longhand, the reaction is that of magnesium chloride and water to produce magnesium(2) ion, two chloride(1) ions, and water. This type of reaction is dissociation. Another specific chemical reaction in study was that of this shorthand: KCl + H20 K+ + Cl- + H20. In longhand, the reaction is that of potassium chloride to produce potassium(1) ion, chloride(1) ion, and water. This type of reaction is dissociation. Another specific chemical reaction in study was that of this shorthand: CaCl2 + H20 Ca2+ + 2Cl- + H20. In longhand, the reaction is that of calcium chloride and water to produce calcium(2) ion, two chloride(1) ions, and water. This type of reaction is dissociation.
